The British Government allows UK Personal Pensions and Occupation Pension Plans to be transferred with you when you emigrate to New Zealand, provided the receiving scheme is registered with HMRC.
Pension Transfers has successfully transferred many pensions from the UK and we are well placed to provide you with the advice on your UK pensions.
Their New Zealand office is regulated by the Financial Markets Authority (FMA).
If you already have a pension or have contracted out of SERPS you’ve already started.
If you already have a pension in the UK or have contracted out of State 2nd Pension (previously known as SERPS), great, you are on the way, and can get these benefits tax-free. When you emigrate to New Zealand, don’t let it waste away in the UK just waiting for the tax man to pounce, use it as your tax-free spring board to get your superannuation plan started.
Pension Transfers can arrange a report that will investigate whether you would benefit from transferring your UK pensions to New Zealand. You can leave your pension in the UK but you will be subject to New Zealand tax when you start to withdraw your benefits. By transferring your UK pension to New Zealand you can receive you benefits tax free and even have the flexibility of withdrawing your benefits before you retire.
Some other advantages of transferring your UK pension could include:
- Access your pension benefits from age 55
- Consolidation of all your benefits in once scheme
- Removal on ongoing currency risk
- Superior death benefits (full balance paid to beneficiary or estate on death)
How to start the process:
Log on to www.pensiontransfers.co.nz and submit the fact finder online, print off the letter of authority, sign and send back to Pension Transfers.
Once your signed authority is received, Pension Transfers will request all the information required in order to produce a report that will recommend whether you should be transferring your pension to New Zealand.
If a transfer is recommended, they will then arrange for all the paperwork required for the transfer to a Qualified Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS). A QROPS is a pension scheme, established in New Zealand that is broadly similar to a UK registered pension scheme. Once all paperwork has been completed, Pension Transfers will put you in contact with an Authorised Financial Adviser who will arrange your pension transfer. They will set up your compliant Superannuation Fund to enable your UK pension to be received in accordance with current legislation in the UK and NZ.
When you transfer a UK pension, the funds will usually be GBPs, and some schemes will change the funds to New Zealand dollars on arrival. But the scheme Pension Transfers use allows you to keep your funds in GBPs as long as you wish and you can even invest in GBP denominated investments, which in the current climate is extremely useful.
Our team in New Zealand will provide you with specific advice on the best product that will meet your needs once you have decided to make the transfer.
