Start your migration journey by completing the Electrical Skills Assessment for Australia, with expert support from the Down Under Centre.
Why do Electricians need a Skills Assessment?
If you’re a qualified Electrician planning to make the move to Australia, the Electrical Skills Assessment is a vital stage of the process. Not only is it necessary for your Visa application, but it’s also an important step towards working legally and safely in your trade once you arrive in Australia.
Once you successfully complete the Electrical Skills Assessment, you’ll receive an Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR) and Skills Assessment letter. Your Skills Assessment letter is required for migration.
The Electrical Skills Assessment is required if you’re applying for a skilled visa like the 189, 190, or 491.
For licensed trades in Australia (Electricians, Plumbers and Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanics), a skills assessment is not mandatory for a 482 employer sponsored visa.
However, licensed trades in Australia would need to obtain the skills assessment, to get the Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR), so that you can apply for a provisional license to work in Australia.
You would then need to complete the Gap Training to get a full Electrical license.
To qualify, you must have:
- A formal electrical qualification with 4 years’ full-time paid work experience, or;
- 6 years’ of full-time paid experience, if you don’t hold a formal electrical qualification.
You will also need to prove that you have worked as an Electrician for a minimum of 12 months in the last 36 months.
Who conducts the Electrical Skills Assessment for Australia?
The Down Under Centre and Australian Trade Training College (ATTC) are proud to assess Electricians for Trades Recognition Australia (TRA).
We assist you in gathering and presenting all the required documentation and provide ongoing support throughout the Electrician Skills Assessment process. We will also oversee the Practical Assessment.
What’s involved in the Electrical Skills Assessment process?
The Electrical Skills Assessment is broken into three stages:
Stage 1: Documentary Evidence
Submit evidence of:
- Electrical qualification(s)
- Employment history (references, payslips, tax documents)
We’ll help you gather the right documents to avoid delays.
Stage 2: Technical Interview
Once Stage 1 is approved, you’ll have a technical interview with an assessor. This is your opportunity to showcase your knowledge and experience in electrical systems. You’ll be asked a series of questions about the work you’ve done, tools you’ve used, safety protocols, and more.
The interview is conducted via Zoom video call with an approved Electrical Assessor.
Stage 3: Practical Assessment for Electrician Skills Assessment Australia
You’ll also be required to do a Practical Assessment. In the Practical Assessment, you will complete a series of electrical tasks while being observed by an assessor. We deliver the Practical Assessments at our Leatherhead, Surrey UK office. The Practical Assessments also take place in Queensland, Australia and in the Philippines.
