If you are a Bricklayer moving to Australia on a skilled points-based visa or an ENS 186 employer sponsored visa, you will need to complete the mandatory Bricklayer skills assessment to emigrate to Australia. Bricklayer ANZSCO Code 331111.

Process for Bricklaying Skills Assessment for Australia

The skills assessment process for Bricklayers is in 2 stages. Bricklaying in Australia is not a licensed trade but many Bricklayers in Australia may move onto to be builders or project managers. It’s important to remember that once you have successfully completed your Bricklaying skills assessment you will receive your Bricklaying Australian Certificate III which will be required when you apply for your Builder’s licence.

1. Documentary Assessment for Bricklayer skills assessment Australia $1,120

This part of the skills assessment is considered the most difficult part by many clients. You need to prove you are a qualified or an experienced Bricklayer.

  • If you hold trade related qualifications, you’ll be asked to prove you have a minimum of 3 years’ full-time paid work experience.
  • If you don’t have trade related qualifications, you’ll be asked to prove you have a minimum of 5 years’ full time paid work experience.

You also need to prove that you have been working as a Bricklayer for 12 months out of the last 36 months. To prove work experience required for the Australian Bricklaying skills assessment, you will need to provide pay and tax evidence, statements of service, photos, videos and more. 

It is very important to remember that most of your evidence gathering for your Bricklayer skills assessment is also required for your skilled points-based or employer sponsored visa. 2. Technical Interview for Bricklayer skills assessment Australia $2,000

The final part of your skills assessment as a Bricklayer is an online Technical interview.

The assessing authority will organise a Technical Interview with an Australian Qualified Bricklayer who is also an Australian qualified trainer and assessor to discuss your application with you as well as your everyday working life as a Bricklayer. Please note that if the assessor feels that you do not have the necessary skills to work in Australia as a qualified Bricklayer they will ask you to provide further information or complete a practical assessment site visit which will be at your cost. The Down Under Centre have never had a Bricklayer that has required a site visit, as we work closely with bricklayers to ensure that this does not need to happen.

Bricklayers emigrating to Australia FAQs

No, it’s not required. You are required to either hold your completed apprenticeship papers as a Bricklayer and 3 years’ of full-time paid work experience pre or post qualification. So, if you are from the UK and hold a formal qualification as a Bricklayer you would only require the 3 years’ of employment experience.

If you have NO NVQ or formal training for example, then you are required to have a minimum of 5 years’ full-time paid employment experience. It is common for our clients to be assessed without holding any formal training or qualification so we use your 5 years’ of paid work experience as evidence. Your evidence also must show you have worked in your occupation for at least 12 months within the last 3 years and must be able to be verified.

The cost of the skills assessment is dictated by TRA (Trades Recognition Australia). You pay them directly and they have chosen RTOs (Registered Training Organisations) that deliver the Bricklayer skills assessment for Australian migration.

The cost for the Documentary Assessment is $1120 and for the Technical Interview the cost is $2000.

An Australian Bricklayer skills assessment is required so that you, the migrant, can apply for an Australian Visa. This is the way Australian Immigration can gauge if you are in fact a Bricklayer under the Australian guidelines.

Duties of Bricklayers in Australia

Bricklaying in Australia is a very well respected trade. There is a demand for Bricklayers as Australia has a growing economy and an ageing population meaning our workforce is drying up. Bricklayers complete tasks in domestic, commercial or industrial work places. Most commonly bricklayers in Australia will work on a building site. Bricklayers lay bricks, pre-cut stone, concrete and other types of building blocks in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures.

Bricklayers looking to migrate to Australia would need to be able to complete the following tasks:

Brick and block cutting Cavity brick work. Veneer work. Multi thickness brickwork and blockwork. Paving Curved walls. Retaining walls. Steps. Arches and chimneys. Work from plans and specifications. Check the vertical and horizontal alignment of work. Use various tools and brick-cutting machines to cut and shape bricks. Repair and maintain clay bricks, cement blocks/bricks and related structures. Erect scaffolding (subject to licence requirements in some states).
