Process for Cook skills assessment Australia
1. Documentary Assessment for Cook skills assessment Australia $1,280
This is where you will need to provide as much information and documentary evidence as you can of your previous work experience as a Cook.
If you hold trade related qualifications, you’ll be asked to prove you have a minimum of 3 years’ work experience.
If you don’t have trade related qualifications, you’ll be asked to prove you have a minimum of 5 years’ work experience.
You will also need to prove that you have worked as a Cook for a minimum of 12 months out of the last 36 months.
There will be a list of mandatory documentation that you must provide and a list of useful documentation that you could include in your application. You will also need to supply contact details of two work referees who can confirm your skills in the industry.
Down Under Centre Agency Service £600 + VAT
The Down Under Centre can provide you with an agency service to assist Cooks migrating to Australia with the gathering of your documentation for your Australian qualification, as it is considered to be the most difficult stage of your visa application. It pays to make sure you gather the year’s evidence required for your visa application.
3. Technical Interview for Cook skills assessment Australia $2,000
An assessor will review the information and evidence you have provided and begin to match your skills to the units/subjects in the qualification. A Technical interview with the assessor will be arranged to discuss and identify your previous experience. Cooks will need to concoct, season and cook food in eating and catering institutions.
Some tasks include examining produces to confirm quality and regulating temperatures of ovens, grills and other cooking equipment. You’ll be making and cooking food and ensure you are flavouring food during the cooking process. Distributing food, placing it on plates, and adding gravies, sauces and garnishes is what is required. Additionally, packing food in temperature controlled facilities and preparing food to meet special nutritional requirements. You could plan menus and guess food requirements; you may possibly train other kitchen staff and apprentices.

What is the difference between the Chef skills assessment and Cook skills assessment for Australia?
In Australia, Chef = Chief! A Chef in Australia must be able to demonstrate a broad range of kitchen management skills and experience, in addition to cooking skills. This includes people management (e.g. rotas, coaching, training & development, handling conflict), finance management (budgeting, costings, stock control) as well as daily operational management including overseeing Food Hygiene standards and Health & Safety. The Cook skills assessment for Australian migration is a 2 stage approach. You need to prove to the assessor you have the necessary skills as a Cook.
The first stage is paper based, proving you are a Cook though payslips, detailed CV, references, videos, photos, qualifications. This is called the documentary assessment for the Cook skills assessment Australia.
The second stage is a technical interview with an Australian qualified Cook and is also a qualified trainer and assessor. This is a relaxed chat over Skype or Zoom where you have a one to one with our Australian Cook Assessors.
No, its not mandatory. If you completed an apprenticeship as a Cook, then you are required to show 3 years of paid work experience pre or post qualification. For example, if you are from the UK and hold an NVQ3 as a Cook, you would require the 3 years work experience as a Cook.
If you do not hold an NVQ3 as a Cook, then you are required to have a minimum of 5 years paid work experience as a Cook.
The costs of the Cook skills assessment is dictated by TRA (Trades Recognition Australia). You pay them directly and they have chosen RTOs (Registered Training Organisations) that deliver the Cook skills assessment for Australian skilled migration.
